Did I love a dream?

De faun, een wezen van het bosleven, ontwaakt uit zijn middagslaap en overdenkt zijn ochtendlijke jacht op verleidelijke nimfen. In zijn overpeinzingen neemt de jacht wellustige proporties aan terwijl hij zijn verlangen probeert te bevredigen.

Het is een prachtige herinnering — maar is het echt gebeurd? Beelden vervagen. Die heerlijke sensaties die zijn geest plagen, worden vaag en hij kan de gebeurtenissen niet meer vastleggen. De realiteit ontgaat hem, verwarring heerst, totdat hij niet langer zeker weet of hij zich feiten of fantasieën herinnert. Opnieuw wordt hij overmand door slaap, wat alleen maar kan leiden tot meer dromen.

Geïnspireerd door Vaslav Nijinski, in samenwerking met Mx Justin Vivian Bond

Toen Nijinsky het verhaal in 1912 in Parijs danste, creëerde hij een schandaal. Schaamteloos, verklaarden de critici. De vleselijke subtekst van Mallarmé's gedicht was een expliciete uitdrukking van een seksuele eetlust geworden. Het ballet ging verder dan het sensuele naar een demonstratie van krachtige viriliteit.

Did I love a dream?

The faun, a creature of sylvan life, awakens from his mid-day sleep and contemplates his morning’s pursuit of alluring nymphs. In his reflections, the chase takes on libidinous proportions as he seeks to satisfy his desire.

It is a beautiful memory — but did it really happen? Images fade. Those delicious sensations that tease his mind grow vague, and he cannot recapture the events. Reality eludes him, confusion reigns, until he is no longer certain if he is remembering fact or fancy. Once again, he is overcome by sleep, which can only lead to more dreaming.
